ACCIDENT RECONSTRUCTION
Applied Forensic Engineering (AFE), is the process of scientifically evaluating available information and physical evidence to determine the cause of an accident.
Vehicle accidents are a fact of life. All too often, they lead to extensive property damage and even death. Accident reconstruction, as provided by
An "accident" is defined as "an unexpected and undesirable event". Accident reconstruction
is a branch of causation forensics which involves determining how and why an accident happened. This is accomplished, first, by correctly interpreting the clues left by the remaining physical evidence of the accident, then by reconstructing and studying the events preceding, during, and following the accident.
AFE begins a reconstruction by carefully documenting the crash scene: detailing, mapping and photographing all vehicle markings and the roadway geometry. The vehicle is then thoroughly examined, measured and documented for physical clues. Human factors, as well as environmental and mechanical factors, are studied for their relevance to the events preceding the collision. Visibility, occupant kinematics, and the use of safety restraints are also explored. Finally, the actual reconstruction is performed, often utilizing SMAC computer
simulations to verify speed calculations and study collision trajectories.
AFE also provides independent evaluations of other vehicle-related failures, such as potential tire, brake, steering, or safety system failures, as well as critical evaluations of other firms' accident reconstruction or investigation reports. Lamp filament examinations can also be performed to determine whether the headlamps were on or off at the time of the crash.
AFE can reconstruct all forms of accidents from low-speed accidents to collisions involving fixed objects, tractor trailers, motorcycles, bicycles, pedestrians or trains. Our experts will perform a comprehensive analysis to determine what happened and why. When required, we
can also produce a computer-generated video animation to help explain the accident to a jury.
Regardless of whether it’s a private, commercial, or public vehicle, AFE will provide you with an unbiased and comprehensive report with illustrative pictures, supported by the definitive facts you need to enable you to evaluate and settle your case quickly and in a cost effective manner.
